Guatemala Sibinal

Sibinal is one of the areas of Guatemala most vulnerable to natural disasters and with one of the highest levels of food insecurity in the country (manifesting itself most tragically in a 43% child malnutrition rate). The average Sibinal household has access to less than 0.25 hectares of semi-arable land. The social fabric of these rural communities is also breaking up as years of seasonal migration by the physically able male population to Mexico and permanent migration to the United States (70%).

This current phase of this program assists families in forming fish and flower farming cooperatives to transform from conventional farming systems to sustainable farming systems with a higher level of food sovereignty and ability to serve as models to other communities and school children.
